Better late than never

I'm probably the last to the party.  I learned about the whole 30 last week the day after grocery shopping.  Being as my wife and I hold one another accountable for a budget we lay out at the beginning of the month I couldn't scrap what was just bought.  So I was doing a soft intro last week and officially start tomorrow morning.

I have some concerns as I've never really adhered to a structured diet.  At the same time I'm looking forward to it as since over the last 2 years I've been able to start and maintain an exercise routine, remove soda & most processed foods from my diet.

More concerns that I'm ultimately going to have to beat into submission during my 30 days

  • I've never been able to give up chocolate or ice cream.
  • While my family does a good job of keeping junk food out of the house, I'm still the only one going on this journey in my household.  At some point, I'm going to walk into a room and they will be eating popcorn or my daughter will have cereal for breakfast in front of me.
  • Will I revert to my habits when I'm on the road since I typically opt for drive-thru over sit down service?
  • Will I do the right thing and bring my own lunch when I'm in customer workshops and lunches are catered in?  I know this can be done as I saw this week a co-worker that is killing it with his health goals do that very thing.
  • Slipping up and not trying again
  • Finding out that smoked BBQ without sauce is not permitted
Right now I'm not looking at the entire 30 days but I know I can do tomorrow.  I will worry about day 2 when it gets here.  If day 2 gets hard then it's time to focus on an hour, a minute, a second.

Things I'm excited about
  • A new challenge
  • Getting back into the habit of meal prep for multiple days
  • Finding out if there are certain foods that I'm having reactions to that I'm unaware
  • Learning if my night time congestion is related to food items
  • Explore new recipes
  • Getting my steak on!
  • Learning if my frequent headaches I blame on "the weather" is food related
  • Being an example for my daughters and wife
  • Learning things I'm not even thinking of
  • Getting to a more healthy state.

  1. Hey Matt, great post! Eating this way does cost more, but as they say "pay now or pay later"... the payoff is worth it. If you cannot resist sweets, consider allowing a small bite of (very) dark chocolate (80+% cocoa) after a meal. Ice cream you gotta resist.. I love it too.. but it's LOADED with sugar. This is a mental game. Your brain is wired for these "rewards" and you are going to have conversations with yourself a LOT... this is cool though, I call it "voluntary discomfort" - it's a good character builder. The walking into the room and people are munching thing happens to me constantly... tell yourself "it's just 30 days... 25K people die from starvation daily! I can do this!" Customers... don't say a word, eat a salad, skip the cookie, and do your business. Nobody cares but you. If you slip up, stay with it, get back on the horse. BBQ sauce has a TON of sugar in it as well, that's why it's a no no. Find an alternative sauce, there are many. One day at a time is what they tell addicts, and we are all addicts, trust me. They say you cannot have smoothies simply because they are made by a machine. I don't buy into that. I've been making them... will post recipe.
